The meter

The lowest ceiling in the $49 band

Affiliate revenue is the meter, and Starter runs out sooner than any of its price peers.

FirstPromoter meters on monthly revenue from affiliates. What sets it apart is where the first step lands: $5,000/mo. Rewardful charges the same $49 and gives you $7,500. Tolt charges $69 for $10,000, and Referly $75 for $10,000.

Starter also holds the only affiliate cap in the band, at 1,000 affiliates, plus 3 campaigns and 2 websites. The honest counterweight: Referly caps too, at $10,000/mo on Startup and $30,000/mo on Business.

Both published ladders. FirstPromoter's first step is at $5,000 and Referly's at $10,000, which is the whole shape of the difference between the two bills in that range.

The fees on top

The fees on top

One thing to report, and the precise wording matters.

Transaction fee: not stated

Unknown: no figure is published

No transaction fee appears anywhere on their pricing page. Not stated is a fact about the site; it is not the same as zero, and this page will not write it as zero. Ask before you sign if it matters to you.

Managed auto payouts

Gated, not priced

Automated payout handling is a Business-and-above feature rather than a fee. On Starter you pay affiliates yourself, which is a cost in time rather than money.

Referly's own fees, in the same format: 0% transaction fee on every plan, meaning no cut of sales, affiliate revenue or commission volume. Two optional charges do carry a percentage and neither is a transaction fee: agency client billing at 5% / 2.5% / 1%, only if an agency invoices its clients through Referly, and Referly Payouts at 5% bank/ACH and 8% card, only if you use the managed payout rail.

The Starter gate list

Eight features sit above the $49 plan. It is the longest gate list in the band.

Referly gates things too, and on the same basis: automated payouts, EU self-billing invoices, W-9/W-8 collection and the custom portal domain all start on Business at $149. Coupon tracking and link tracking are on every plan, and sub-affiliate tiers are 2 levels, not unlimited.

Is FirstPromoter worth the money?

FirstPromoter is good value if

  • You're under $5,000/mo in affiliate revenue, where $49 is competitive
  • You bill through Stripe, Chargebee or Paddle and won't add a store
  • Built-in affiliate email automation is a feature you'll genuinely use
  • Your affiliate-facing surface can carry "Powered by" branding for now

It stops being good value when

  • You cross $5,000/mo, the earliest cliff in the band, and pay $99
  • You want your own branding on the affiliate dashboard, which is a Business feature
  • You need automated payouts handled for you rather than by you
  • You add Shopify or WooCommerce, which no plan supports

Referly is $75/mo and caps at $10,000/mo in affiliate revenue on Startup, twice FirstPromoter's first ceiling at a higher entry price. What differs: it tracks Shopify as well as Stripe, collects W-9 and W-8 forms from the Business plan, includes a marketplace, and charges no per-sale fee on any plan.

Referly is $24/mo less at this size, which is $288 over a year.

FirstPromoter's plan is chosen by its published caps, including the 1,000-affiliate limit on Starter. A fee that is not stated is modelled as zero here, which flatters them and is still the honest way to handle an absent number.

At $10,000/mo in affiliate revenue with 200 affiliates and a 20% commission, FirstPromoter comes to $99/mo on Business and Referly to $75/mo on Startup. Drag the sliders to your own numbers.
