Overview

Referly and Creem

Creem is a merchant of record for software and SaaS sellers. Referly tracks its sales, subscription renewals, refunds and discount codes through one signed webhook, and attributes each order to the right affiliate.

What connects

What Referly tracks in Creem

Fourteen things, each one read from what Creem reports rather than from a feature list. The two chips below are the short answer.

Referrals trackedSales tracked

What it does

  • YesA signup, trial or new customer is recorded against the partner who sent them, before any money moves.
  • YesEvery completed payment arrives as a sale with its amount, products and currency, and a commission is calculated from it.
  • YesRenewals arrive as their own payments, so a partner can be paid for a set number of payments, a set number of months, or for the life of the customer.
  • YesRefunds and chargebacks both reverse the commission automatically. A partial refund reverses the full commission, not a share of it.
  • YesA customer who types a partner's discount code at checkout is attributed to that partner, with no link click and no cookie involved.
  • YesCodes are created in Creem when a partner joins. A code created without a product limit is pinned to the products that existed at the time.
  • YesReferly reads your product catalogue, so a rule can pay one rate on one product and a different rate on another.
  • YesTax is subtracted before the commission is calculated, so you are not paying a percentage of money that belongs to a tax authority. On by default, and switchable.
  • YesA partner's balance can be issued as Creem customer credit instead of cash.
  • YesAn `rsubID` on the inbound link travels all the way to the sale, so an ad platform or a network can match the conversion back to its own click.

What it does not, or only sometimes

  • NoTarget a whole collection instead of listing its products one by one, and new products in that collection inherit the rate.
  • With a conditionCreem sells software and digital products, so there is no shipping to deduct.
  • With a conditionPayment links need one provided snippet. A checkout built on Creem's API needs one metadata field passed through.
  • NoYou paste an API key and signing secret into Referly, then create the webhook in Creem's dashboard yourself.
  • NoPartners are added to a named list or group in your email platform as they join, so onboarding and announcements go out from the tool you already write in.
  • NoMoney actually leaves through this platform. Referly hands it the batch, and it moves the funds to each partner.
  • NoOne approval sends every partner what they are owed, rather than one transfer at a time.

Setup

Connect Creem in four steps

Four steps, in order. The honest note underneath says which of them need someone technical and what the connection does not do.

  1. 1

Create the webhook in Creem's dashboard

Point it at your Referly webhook URL and select all thirteen events, so sales, renewals, refunds and chargebacks arrive.

  2. 2

Paste your Creem API key and signing secret into Referly

Both come from Creem's developer settings. The secret is how Referly verifies every webhook it receives.

  3. 3

Add the tracking script and pass the partner id into checkout

Payment links get a provided snippet that sets referly_ref for you. The checkout API takes it as one metadata field.

    Needs a developer
  4. 4

Create or import discount codes, then invite partners

Optional. Referly creates a Creem code per partner, or imports codes you already have, so a code attributes without a link.

Checkout happens on Creem's own domain, so attribution depends on step 3: the referral id has to travel into the checkout as metadata, set by the payment-link snippet or by your own checkout call. Renewals, trials, refunds and chargebacks all arrive through the webhook, and a refund or chargeback claws the commission back — though a partial refund reverses the whole commission, not a share of it. One quirk when creating codes: a code with no product limit is pinned to the products that existed when it was created, so set a limit or recreate the code after your catalogue changes.

  • Through checkout metadata and discount codes. The checkout runs on creem.io, so a cookie on your site cannot follow the customer there. Instead the referral id travels into the checkout as referly_ref metadata — set by the snippet for payment links, or by your own checkout call — and Creem's webhook reports the sale back with it. A partner's discount code attributes on its own, with no link involved.
